Discipline Yourself When It Comes to Spending Money
August 28th, 2006 Debt
Each of us has to have some sort of discipline in our lives, so why not set boundaries for yourself with regard to money? If you don’t, you will end up having no control over your own financial situation. Some of you may already be there.
Instead of continuing this lack of control, discipline yourself. When you do well, reward yourself. For instance, if you have set a goal not to go to the mall or buy clothes or shoes for six months and, at the end of that time, you have successfully completed your goal, then reward yourself by spending a small amount (e.g., five to ten dollars) on something you really want.
On the other hand, when you lack control, don’t justify your misdeeds. If you end up going to the mall or buying clothes or shoes for yourself within the six-month period, don’t justify your actions by saying, “I really did need this outfit” or “I really did need this pair of shoes.” Instead, “punish” yourself for not keeping your goal by maybe extending the time you will be restricted.
