Plan Ahead for Your Vacation for Smart Budgeting

May 10th, 2009 Budgeting

VacationDepending on your financial means, you may travel extensively throughout the year or like many of us, take one big trip during the year after saving up enough money.  While there are many ways to save for the trip from creating a separate vacation account and putting money in monthly to stashing cash away in a vacation cookie jar, the actual cost of the trip is usually not what bursts the budget you may have planned.

There are numerous travel agents and web sites to call and search to get the best prices on airfare, hotels and car rentals.  It is those extra activities that can quickly add up and result in an unpleasant surprise.   The simplest example is cruising.  You book an inexpensive cruise with great airfare only to realize at the end of the trip that each excursion you took and meal out you ate while the ship was docked added hundreds or more to the trip.

The same is true of traditional travel. You should take the time to research the area to which you are traveling and plan your daily activities. If you are planning to attend a theme park, zoo or other attractions which charge admission, you can almost always find discount tickets on the Internet.   These may be printable discount coupons or advance purchase tickets.  These purchases will greatly reduce your costs and save you planning time at your destination.  In fact, it is one of the few ways you can legally print money because that’s really what you are doing when taking advantage of this type of savings.

Eating at restaurants is another budget breaker.  Especially if you are traveling with families, you should endeavor to make a reservation at one of the many hotels now including a free continental hot breakfast as part of the stay. Again, it will save you time in the morning, is convenient and saves money on expensive breakfast meals.  In addition, if you do eat out, many restaurants have lower prices at lunch.  Try to make lunch your biggest meal of the day and eat lighter fare for dinner.   It simply pays to plan ahead for your vacation.
